Founded by Miss Olive Willis at Down House, the former home of Charles Darwin, in the village of Downe in Kent, Downe House UK aims to ignite a love of learning in every pupil making them believe that there is nothing they cannot achieve in the world.

Disillusioned by the independent education that existed for girls at the time, our founder, Miss Olive Willis, held the strong belief that a school should meet the needs of young women by valuing and prizing individuals and engendering a strong sense of community.

A culture of academic endeavour: At Downe House we aim to foster a culture of academic endeavour where enjoyment of learning is unlimited. All students have a wide range of choice and opportunities available to have their intellectual life enriched through stimulating and substantive academic endeavours. They are encouraged to take a lead in sharing their love of learning with their peers.

When learning leaves the classroom: As a full boarding school, we are not tied by the constraints of a traditional school day, and as such we provide an exceptional range of opportunities both inside and outside the classroom.

With a rich and varied programme of co-curricular activities, girls are able to develop interests in subjects, sports, hobbies and interests that may not previously have been experienced or considered.

From film club to drama, horse-riding to astronomy, current affairs to the choir, we believe that learning goes beyond the classroom and we encourage every girl to ‘have a go’ whatever their level of ability.

Home-from-Home: Each House is run by a Housemistress who oversees a dedicated team of Housestaff and Tutors. Our Housemistresses are teachers who understand both the academic and pastoral lives of our girls. The pastoral care at Downe House is holistic and looks different for each individual. Through the nurturing boarding environment, our dedicated Housestaff team will help your daughter grow to her potential, find balance and develop essential skills for life.
